Shyamal Mukhopadhyay, Poetry 2020 Longlist

WORDS NOT SPOKEN

Not always all words need be spoken

Song of silence contains melody hidden

From all such words remain unspoken

Kept secretly inside the heart`s cavern;

Our wishes aspire with wings to fly

Sailing on cloud boat in open blue sky

Playing with wind overlooking the meadow

Where crimson flowers bloom under hill shadow;

O n lonely moments, when dusk befalls at conch sound

Also from somewhere azaans vibrating around

Our unspoken words do come out from its hidden shelter

Along with our desires disappear into the unknown anywhere:

Then the old Moon would assemble all those lost words oneday

To coin a fable to be told to the seagulls—as they say.
