Poetry 2017 Longlist Debjeet Mukherjee

Broken Glass

My window pane was broken I found,
As I returned from my trip at noon.
The glass shattered to pieces on ground;
Called for help and repairs were needed soon.

I looked for signs of robbery around,
But luckily found none as a surprise!
Searched for someone’s hiding sound,
Still nothing was there to be concise.

Staring for some time at the window,
I saw the forest it overlooked by.
Maybe it was a wild cat or an owl,
That came for a visit to this house of my!

Tired from exhaustion I retired a bit fast,
Took a nap in that cozy bed of mine.
Cold winds at evening from the broken glass;
Woke me up an hour before snack time.

Helping me with some snacks and tea,
I sat near my broken window against light.
The visions I saw outside, it rather be
Dark soon, because of the full moon night.

The moonlight reflected on my broken glass,
As the cold winds still came in strong!
Why would cats and owls break and pass?
Was the question answered right or wrong?
