Poetry 2014 Shortlist, Jonali Karmakar

A candle and a candlestick

A candle, I
You, a candlestick.
Alone we are, sold not in unison.
You are to support me
And I am destined to melt over you.
Hot, trickling-
You hold me.
Spent, I lay on you.
Burnt out as I extinguish.
Then I am replaced.
You remain the same.
A candlestick
To hold a candle!
A new candle, I
Or someone else.
United, spent and extinguished again.
